Two more rushed to hospital with heatstroke

first_imgTwo elderly people were rushed to hospital the past 24 hours with heatstroke symptoms, one of them in critical condition, it was reported on Tuesday.According to the health ministry, a 71-year-old woman from Nicosia and an 85-year-old man from Larnaca, both with chronic medical conditions, were rushed to hospital with high fever, confusion and hypotension.The 71-year-old is in the Intensive Care Unit of the Nicosia general hospital.On Sunday two women, aged 60 and 75, died from heatstroke, while three other people, among them a one-year-old whose parents left it out to play near a pool in the afternoon, were rushed to the Nicosia general hospital with heatstroke symptoms. The other two cases concerned elderly people, one of them in serious condition.Due to the high temperatures, the health ministry urges members of the public, especially those in vulnerable groups – infants, the elderly and pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses or under medication – to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun and heavy physical exercise.Following the record temperatures of the last few days, as of Tuesday, temperatures were expected to drop. The Met office said that temperatures would start to fall and by Wednesday would return to normal  levels for July which was around 36C to 37C.Maximum temperatures last Sunday – 36.7C in the mountains, 41.4C in Limassol, 41.9 C in Paralimni, 41.6C in Paphos and up to 44.6C in Nicosia – were all record highs for July in the last 30 years. In fact, in the last 30 years only once was a higher temperature recorded – on August 1, 2010 when it reached 45.6 C in Nicosia.
