first_imgRolling Stone posted an Oct. 2 picture showing the Oscar-winning actor shaking hands with the mustachioed drug cartel leader.Penn writes that Guzmán gave him a “compadre” hug when they met. He said they had a seven-hour sitdown followed by phone and video interviews.“I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world,” Guzmán said over sips of tequila. “I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats.”The White House said Guzmán’s boast about his trafficking exploits “is maddening.”Rolling Stone also posted a video showing Guzmán without a mustache, saying he decided to go into drug trafficking after the age of 15 because there were “no job opportunities” and “no other way to survive.”Asked if he felt some responsibility for the high level of addictions in the world, he said: “It’s false. The day that I don’t exist, it won’t reduce drug trafficking.”In a text message exchange after their meeting, Guzmán discussed a marine helicopter raid in which authorities almost captured him on Oct. 6. He played down injuries to his face and leg reported by the authorities, saying: “Not like they said. I only hurt my leg a little bit.”Authorities said the marines did not shoot Guzmán during the raid because he was accompanied by two women and a girl, but that he hurt himself in a fall.Extradition bidThe Rolling Stone interview emerged after Mexican prosecutors announced that they would start proceedings to extradite Guzmán to the United States, a reversal from President Enrique Peña Nieto’s earlier refusal to send him across the border. But Guzmán lawyer Juan Pablo Badillo vowed to appeal to the Supreme Court if necessary.Guzmán is now back in the same prison that he escaped from on July 11, when he snuck down a hole in his prison cell’s shower that led to a 1.5-kilometer (one-mile) tunnel outside the prison. The world’s most wanted drug baron was arrested after a military raid on a house in Los Mochis in which five suspects died and one marine was wounded. Six people were detained in the operation.Guzmán and his security chief fled through the city’s drainage system, but they were caught later after they stole a car. Facebook Comments MEXICO CITY – Sean Penn’s interview with drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán caused a cross-border uproar on Sunday, with Mexican authorities seeking to question him while U.S. critics lashed out at the U.S. actor.A federal official told AFP that the attorney general’s office wanted to talk with Penn and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo about their secretive meeting with Guzmán in October, three months before his capture.“That is correct, of course, it’s to determine responsibilities,” the official said on condition of anonymity, declining to provide more details, including a possible date for an interview with the stars.A second federal official said it was unclear whether Penn and del Castillo, who brokered the meeting, had violated any Mexican law. While a reporter could interview a drug cartel suspect, “they’re not journalists,” the official said.White House chief of staff Denis McDonough told CNN that Penn’s meeting with Guzmán “poses a lot of interesting questions for him and others involved in this so-called interview. We’ll see what happens.” This combination of file photos shows, from left to right, U.S. actor Sean Penn, drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo. AFPThe U.S. rock magazine Rolling Stone on Saturday published the interview that Guzmán gave to the actors in an undisclosed jungle clearing in Mexico.Despite Penn’s cloak-and-dagger efforts to keep the gathering secret, a Mexican official told AFP that authorities found out about the meeting, which eventually helped them track down the Sinaloa drug cartel chief.Guzmán, 58, was arrested on Friday in a deadly military raid in the seaside city of Los Mochis, in his northwestern home state of Sinaloa.Attorney General Arely Gómez said on Friday that Guzmán had met with unnamed actors and producers to discuss making a biopic about himself and that it was part of a “new line of investigation.”Some legal experts, however, doubt that Penn could face charges in the United States or Mexico.“I seriously doubt that charges will be brought against them even though Sean Penn took extraordinary steps to prevent authorities from using his phone to track the whereabouts of Chapo,” said Mike Vigil, a former senior official at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.Floyd Abrams, a New York attorney known for his defense of journalists, said Penn did not violate any U.S. laws.‘Grotesque’ interviewThe meeting sparked criticism in the United States, with Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio told ABC television that the interview was “grotesque.”Journalists questioned the ethical merits of the interview.Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron tweeted a link to a December story about the dangers and death faced by Mexican journalists, commenting: “Good moment to remember what happens to real journalists who cover Mexican drug traffickers.” Related posts:Sinaloa drug cartel lives on despite ‘CEO’ El Chapo’s capture Actor Sean Penn secretly interviewed ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán in hideout before capture Alleged Mexican drug lord pleads not guilty in US court VIDEO: The glamorous wife of ‘El Chapo’ explains why you should feel sorry for the drug lordcenter_img Good moment to remember what happens to real journalists who cover Mexican drug traffickers https://t.co/xb7OASMTNe— Marty Baron (@PostBaron) January 10, 2016last_img read more

first_imgMembers of the Legislative Assembly approved Thursday in the first of two debates the proposal 19.548, Law of Mobility and Cyclical Security, an initiative to incentivize private companies and local governments to promote bicycles as means of transportation. The initiative was approved unanimously, with the support of 43 congressmen, and was celebrated by the president of the Congress, Carolina Hidalgo, who highlighted the impact that the new regulations will have to reduce carbon emissions and to improve biking culture.Celebro la aprobación en primer debate con 43 votos a favor, el Proyecto 19548: Ley de Movilidad y seguridad ciclística Esta iniciativa busca aportar con el objetivo carbono neutral de nuestro país y con la cultura necesaria de pacificación de nuestras vías.— Carolina Hidalgo H. (@CaroHHe) January 10, 2019Among other measures, the law would create tax incentives for companies that develop bicycle infrastructure or acquire them for their employees — specifically through a one-time deduction of those expenses in their income tax returns, as long as they are current in their other tax obligations. In the municipal field, the law would open the door for each municipality to promote public bicycle-rental systems responding to the needs of their public.Likewise, the law declares cycling — and riders’ full and safe mobility — of “public interest” and imposes an obligation on the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) to work on cantonal plans for bicycle safety. Finally, it also requires that all new infrastructure work in road areas should contemplate the objectives of the law, so that each project improves cycling conditions through dedicated bike lanes, shared lanes, pedestrian crossings, and speed bumps, among other methods.Public parking locations would also be required to have a bicycle stand for every ten spaces for cars.FinancingTo comply with all these objectives, the law establishes different funding sources, among them the revenue from the fuel tax.In addition, the government will accept donations and contributions from international organizations — in addition to state loans and non-reimbursable funds.MOPT would be in charge of the application of the new law. Now, the Executive Branch will now regulate the law within a period of six months and, thereafter, the MOPT will have another six-month period to enact the necessary regulations to adapt the infrastructure to current and future operators. This law is part of the initiatives that were presented in the previous legislature. Specifically, it was left in the legislature by former deputies Laura Garro (PAC), Egardo Araya and José Ramírez (FA). first_imgTutankhamun exhibition in Melbourne Museum Source = e-Travel Blackboard: N.J It is only a matter of time until Egypt’s tourism figures rise again, according to Macquarie University’s resident Egyptologist Professor Boyo Ockinga. The professor told e-Travel Blackboard at Egypt Consulate’s ‘Ongoing legacy of Tutankhamun’ evening that the appeal of Egypt and its history will always excite travellers. “Once the political situation settles and once the government situation is stabilised things will settle and people will go back,” Prof. Ockinga said. “The attraction is always going to be there, even if there is slight uncertainty.” According to figures released by the Consulate in Sydney, up to three million people cancelled their bookings into Egypt between February to April as fear still resides among travellers after the political disruption earlier this year. However, tourists have nothing to fear, Professor Naguid Kanawati said during the evening because visitors are not and never were the target. “It was a revolution against a regime, not against foreigners,” Prof. Kanawati said. Among Prof. Kanawati’s biggest regret after the January uprising, was his decision to evacuate as unrest began on the streets, forcing him to miss out on four weeks during his six week research period. “We thought it was unsafe but it wasn’t,” he explained. The Consulate confessed that safety was “the key” to attracting travellers back into the country, but is also anticipating that the Tutankhamun and the Golden Ages exhibition in Melbourne Museum will also “impress” Aussies. “While it is justified to feel uncertain about security in a country that has undergone major political changes, it is only fair to recognise that the situation in Egypt is in the process of settling down,” a statement from the Consulate read. “We hope this special envoy (Tutankhamun exhibition) succeeds in extending a warm invitation to all Australians to visit his homeland and we are equally hopeful that Egypt’s tourism industry will be able to fully recover from the impact of the revolution.” The exhibition showcases 50 pieces from the Pharaoh’s 3,000 year old tomb which was discovered untouched and preserved in 1922.Melbourne is the only Asia-Pacific city chosen for the Tutankhamun and the Golden Age tour and will depart in October, after which it will make its way to the new museum currently in development in Egypt.last_img read more

Source = ETB News: L.B. “All authorities involved and several major travel and tourism organisations have put measures in place with the aim of ensuring safety and convenience to tourists while travelling within Bangkok, and to and from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang International Airports, during the current ongoing anti-government demonstrations,” Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Thawatchai Arunyik said. As well as additional tourist care centres, increased railway frequencies and shuttle bus services, the TAT has also partnered with Airports of Thailand to provide orange permission stickers for airport taxis, identifying them as tourist-carrying vehicles, which will be allowed to pass safely through roads blocked by the protest campaign. Security personnel are concerned about the increasing levels of violence after gunfire and explosions over the weekend, as demonstrators aim to block main locations throughout the city in objection to Thailand’s first female Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra. Although Thai authorities and the nation’s tourism industry have identified measures to aid visitors during these political demonstrations, tourists are strongly advised to stay away from the protests and affected areas, amid fears the violence may lead to a military coup. The protest violence in Bangkok has worsened, with seven protestors shot and wounded, while thousands more plan to storm the city this week, causing major concerns for security.last_img read more

first_imgResidents near the Brisbane Airport flight path are enraged because of the noise the extra flights will create. Brisbane Airport has been granted free reign to run flights 24 hours a day, seven days a week, after a push for a late night curfew was rejected by the Abbott Government. “Having considered all of the submissions, the overwhelming preference is for Queensland to stay open for business without impediments and, in this case, without air brakes,” Mr Truss said. Tourism Minister Warren Truss said that the curfew would be an unnecessary burden on industry. Brisbane Airport Corporation dismissed such concerns, noting that noise management at Brisbane Airport is among the most advanced in the world. The decision represents a victory for backers of having no curfew, including the Newman Government and Brisbane Airport, Perth Now reported. The local MP for Griffith, Terri Butler, said that local residents would be disturbed by 10 to 40 flights between 11am and 6am each month. The decision was made following a recommendation by the Brisbane Airport Curfew Committee, which included members of all levels of government and the industry.
