first_imgREGINA – An indigenous woman in Regina says she believes “people are going to die” because of the Saskatchewan government’s decision to shut down the provincial bus service.Connie Deiter said that’s why she has filed a complaint with the human rights commission alleging that the decision discriminates against her and other indigenous women.Deiter said First Nations women took the bus because they couldn’t afford couldn’t afford cars.“If you’re poor, you don’t have access to a vehicle, a lot of our people don’t, the only option is to hitchhike and that’s already happening,” Deiter said Thursday.“You’ll see people hitchhiking on the road now where they probably would have been taking (the bus). You never used to see them hitchhiking before … but now you’re seeing men and women with their luggage and their children. I saw that in Fort Qu’Appelle just a couple of days ago.”A friend picked up a First Nations elder who was walking with a cane and suitcase, Deiter said. She said a woman disappeared about two weeks ago while hitchhiking from Yorkton to North Battleford.“And this has been less than a month since the STC closed, so yeah I think we are looking at ‘Highways of Tears’ all over the province,” she said. Her reference was to a notorious stretch of highway in northern British Columbia that became known as the “Highway of Tears” after 18 women were murdered or disappeared since the 1970s.The Saskatchewan government said it would be inappropriate to comment on the complaint because the matter is before the human rights commission. The government shut down the 70-year-old Saskatchewan Transportation Co. at the end of May as part of an effort to tackle a $1.3 billion deficit.STC reported a net loss of $13 million in the 2015-2016 fiscal year and the government said it would need $85 million over the next five years to keep operating. The government hopes private companies will fill the void.Deiter said she’d like to see a system that’s partially funded or organized by the Saskatchewan government. In British Columbia, First Nations leaders and mayors pushed the government to fund transportation along Highway 16, which stretches between Prince George and Prince Rupert. The B.C. government finally came up with a transportation plan last year, but only after a decade of advocacy and a 2012 report from a missing women inquiry that recommended bus service along the 700-kilometre corridor where people often hitchhike to get around.Deiter said the change was only made after women died. She hopes Saskatchewan doesn’t wait for that to happen.“I just hope that the provincial government shows some sympathy or some empathy for those people who are going to be hitchhiking,” said Deiter.“I hate to be the one that’s being a foreteller of bad times, but I mean people are going to die and I’m hoping that there’s going be some sort of a change.”last_img read more

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Zane Gonzalez kicked a 44-yard field goal for Arizona with 1:41 left, Green Bay’s Mason Crosby missed a 49-yard attempt as time expired and the Cardinals braved wintry conditions to hold on for a 20-17 win on Sunday.Crosby pushed his kick wide right, with the flags atop Lambeau Field blowing in toward the field at the time of the kick. The stunned Packers suffered another blow to their fading playoff hopes.Cardinals rookie Josh Rosen struggled for much of the afternoon, but hit veteran wideout Larry Fitzgerald for a sliding 32-yard completion on third-and-23 to help set up Gonzalez’s winning kick.Arizona (3-9) won on the road for the first time since Oct. 7 at San Francisco.Sputtering Green Bay (4-7-1) has lost three straight and five of six.Aaron Rodgers was 31 of 50 for 233 yards and a touchdown. first_imgAntisemitism is rampant in Greece with acts of vandalism noted 16 times over the last year. More recently, the Jewish monument at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was smashed just two days before the commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance in Greece.Prosecutor Evangelos Zarkantzias instructed police on Monday to treat the attack as a breach of Greece’s laws against racism as these carry a heavier penalty than acts of ordinary vandalism. The attacks have concerned the Jewish community in Greece as well as the government of Israel. The Israeli Ambassador to Greece, Irit Ben-Abba, had blamed the Greek Orthodox Church for remaining silent in the face of antisemitism and allowing it to thrive. Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, she called on the Greek Orthodox Church to publically condemn the act. She suggested that it was linked to demonstrations against the Greek government’s signing of the Prespes Agreement. “The anger of the fascist and extreme right elements is coming out and is evidently being taken out on the Jewish sites of northern Greece,” she said.Israeli President Reuven Rivlin called on his Greek counterpart, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, to do something about the attacks. first_imgWest Ham United captain Mark Noble has issued a warning to Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane ahead of the London Derby between both teams on Saturday. The Hammers midfielder has claimed that Kane’s lack of rest will catch up with him sooner rather later. The England striker has had a hectic schedule with club and country over the last 12 months and he returned to pre-season training with the Lilywhites only three weeks after playing for England at the World Cup.Noble wrote in his column in the London Evening Standard, said, according to Standard:“They had three players, Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Harry Winks, in the England team the other night and I wouldn’t have minded their plane home from Spain being delayed for a few days!wayne rooney, harry kane, englandReport: Rooney talks Engalnd Kane and Guardiola George Patchias – September 12, 2019 Wayne Rooney has spoken of his England record, Harry Kane smashing it and Pep Guardiola for England. In an interview on his Wayne Rooney podcast…“Seriously, though, it’s frightening when you look at how much football Harry Kane has played in recent months. It will catch up with them for sure, probably around the Christmas period which is hectic.”“Their manager is good with that, giving them some time off when he can, but it’s a Catch 22 situation because Harry is so driven, he wants to score goals and be involved so he doesn’t want to miss out on games.”“As a fellow player, you try to analyze his strengths and weaknesses and honestly — I don’t see too many of those. As a striker, he’s great in the air, very good with his left foot, brilliant with his right and he’s quicker than a lot of people think.”“When he doesn’t score for a few games, suddenly he’s supposed to be gone, tired.”“I think his performance against Spain this week shows you he still has plenty of energy right now.”last_img read more

first_imgBoth captains would be desperate for a victoryGareth Copley/Getty ImagesThis could be the most explosive match of the entire tournament. A cornered England team, playing on its home turf, in a bit of trouble, take on a rampaging Indian side. The Poms haven’t played as per expectations and have lost three of their matches so far in this tournament. In order to ensure their place in the semis, the hosts have to finally show their quality that got them to the no. 1 spot in ODI cricket. On the other hand, India will look to book their place in the last-4 by winning this game. They did lose a 3-match ODI series to England last year but the Men in Blue were without their main strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah at that time. With him in the team currently and showing great form, the Virat Kohli-led would fancy their chances. So, sparks are certain to fly in this game. A desperate England and a hungry Indian side would go all out for victory. Let’s look at the biggest factors that will decide the outcome of the match. Rohit and Virat have been key to India’s successIANSBatting firstEngland’s celebrated ability to chase down big totals disappeared with the start of this event. They lost just their second game in the World Cup, to Pakistan, when they had to chase. Their other two losses were also while batting second. So, if they have to chase again, under the pressure of needing a victory, it may lead to another capitulation. The way Indian team have batted, a big target may well be set for them. So, batting first would be a big advantage for the Indians and a big relief for England.Indian top orderThe way Indian batting has progressed in the World Cup, the wickets of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be most important. These two batsmen have been very consistent in this event but if England pick up their wickets cheaply and expose a vulnerable looking middle order, then they can turn the screws. How much Rohit and Virat score would be a massive factor. With Bhuvi likely to be fit, will India drop Shami?Paul Kane/Getty ImagesEngland’s opening pairThe absence of Jason Roy has greatly harmed England. His replacement, James Vince, has failed so far and his inability to provide good starts has put pressure on the middle order. Morgan has said that Roy is ‘preparing’ for the match against India, which suggests that he will be fit in time. If the right-hander is back in the XI, that could just be the boost England need. Getting off to a good start against the Indian pace attack would be very crucial for the hosts.India’s selection conundrumWith Bhuvneshwar Kumar likely to be fit, Indian team management has to make a very difficult call regarding which seamer to pair with Bumrah, Bhuvi or Mohammad Shami. The brilliant performance of Shami has meant that he has made a very strong case for remaining in the side while Bhuvi has been a consistent performer over a long time. It won’t be easy for Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri to choose either one. How effective Kuldeep and Chahal are might decide the resultGIANLUIGI GUERCIA/AFP/Getty ImagesEngland’s performance against Indian spinnersDuring the limited overs leg of India’s tour of England last year, Kuldeep Yadav was causing a lot of trouble to English batsmen. However, England managed to deal with him in the last two matches of the 3-game ODI series and won them easily. The duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Yadav have been bowling beautifully in this World Cup also. It may well be the success or failure of English batsmen against KulCha that may be the decisive factor in the match. Without getting the better of these two, England won’t be able to score big.Archer vs RohitThis contest would be very important. Jofra Archer has genuine pace and he likes to test the middle of the wicket. Rohit is a highly efficient puller of the ball. So, when these two face off, it will be a fascinating contest. If Rohit gets set, he is unlikely to miss another big hundred. Archer may be England’s’ best bet to remove the dangerous Indian opener.last_img read more

first_imgStep Afrika!, an international dance company based in Washington, D. C., is commemorating 21 years of dance and educational youth empowerment with a fundraising event. The Step Afrika! VIP Gala will be held on June 9 at Dock 5 Union Market, 1309 5th St. NE., at 7 p.m. Step Afrika! is a nonprofit dance company that serves about 30,000 D.C. high school students per year through extracurricular activities, according to its website. “Stepping with Step Afrika! always promotes high connections with Africa and academic achievement with things like Step Afrika! Reads or Step Up to College,” C. Brian Williams, founder of Step Afrika!, told the AFRO. “A huge portion of the events’ proceeds will go towards the production of two new innovative dance programs that we want to share with the youth entitled ‘Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence’ and ‘Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite’ in conjunction with the Baltimore symphony.”The organization’s rich history started in 1994 after Williams took a trip to South Africa –with a background in stepping as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity — and learned African foot dances, such as Gumboot, which was created by miners in South Africa as an alternative to drumming, which was once illegal. The dance company now tours between 30 to 50 universities and three to 12 countries per year and has serviced more than 100,000 youth since its inception in 1994. The company’s main goal is to build on African tradition while providing optimism and heavy emphasis on college education.“Step Afrika! is extremely dedicated to preserving and promoting the African traditions of performing and using our platform to promote education,” Williams said. For more information, call 202.399.7993 x 112 or email development@stepafrika.org.last_img read more

first_imgGame emulators are a great way of experiencing games from decades past on modern hardware. Without them, we wouldn’t have devices like the RetroN 5, or have Microsoft announce that the Xbox One will soon play Xbox 360 games. Now peripheral manufacturer Hyperkin is doing a similar thing for smartphone gaming with the Smart Boy.The Smart Boy is a controller shaped like the original Game Boy, but without a display. Instead, you slide a smartphone inside to act as the screen. The combination unlocks the ability to play Game Boy games using an emulator running on the phone combined with a real cartridge inserted into the back of the case. So your smartphone becomes a Game Boy while side-stepping the whole issue of game ROMs and piracy.Hyperkin wasn’t sure whether there would be a big enough market for the Smart Boy to make it feasible, so back in March they posted an image of the Alpha Build of the case on Twitter. Then they took the device to E3 after receiving a positive response. Here’s the Alpha Build of the peripheral:The design of the final case looks much more like the original Game Boy design, a fact that could get them into trouble with Nintendo. But when it comes to actually playing Game Boy games, Hyperkin isn’t breaking any laws. Emulators are not illegal, and the case requires you own a copy of a game on a cartridge to play. The Smart Boy is going into full production, but we don’t have a release window for it yet. We can expect it to work with both Android and iOS smartphones, although it’s unclear if that means there will be two versions of the Smart Boy on the market. I’d also like to know the price. It can’t be that much as ultimately it’s a plastic case, Game Boy cartridge reader, and an emulator running on the phone.last_img read more

first_img Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling But it is just a complimentary move. Winston is a different deal. He’s 29. He’s started every game since 2007. He is there to take somebody’s job; it’s not a depth signing and it’s not as a role player. He is there to start. The question is, whose job is in jeopardy? Levi Brown? Bobby Massie (doesn’t seem likely but I’ll throw it out there)? Daryn Colledge (if Brown is moved to right guard)? Some other move that I can’t envision?I’m not sure and perhaps it will take a couple of weeks of camp for the answer to those questions. But there is no question the shrewd offseason for Steve Keim and company has continued right up to the preseason with these moves. It’s too bad it may not get the praise it deserves when you share a division with the Seahawks and 49ers. A solid offseason got better with the news that tackle Eric Winston has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cardinals. Add to that the Cards inking defensive end John Abraham to a two-year deal and it’s hard not to be impressed by the work Steve Keim is doing this offseason. Abraham is a nice complimentary piece. At 35, I have no idea how much tread is left on the tires, but as long as the contract is reasonable it’s worth a shot to see if he can make an impact in a scheme different than what he’s used to. He had 10 sacks and six forced fumbles last year so it’s worth a look. “In view of the foregoing, July 20, 69, according to the centers website. said Tuesday on the House floorThe GOP is not unified on these questions Trump promised not to touch Medicare and Social Security two programs that are popular among his base of working-class white votersDemocrats meanwhile say they expect to roll back significant elements of the tax plan if they gain power in the future Democrats have taken issue with the plan’s disproportionate benefits for the wealthy and corporationsHouse Minority Leader Nancy Pelsoi went as far as to call the bill "Armageddon""I think the bill problem with it is it increases deficits by at least $1 trillion largely to finance a giant tax cut for the wealthy and corporations" said Lily Batchelder a tax law professor at New York University and former Obama administration officialDemocrats might not have a chance to do so unless they recapture the White House in 2020 but there is precedent – President Obama and congressional Republicans agreed to end the George W Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans in a fiscal pact forged on New Year’s Eve 2012Still asking Americans to stomach spending cuts or tax hikes can prove difficult Technically-speaking the tax-cut legislation is supposed to trigger an equivalent amount of spending cuts under a congressional rule enacted in 2010 out of concern for the mushrooming federal debt Congress is widely expected to wave the ruleAnd while Republicans set a significant part of their package – provisions affecting individuals – to expire in 2025 to comply with a Senate rule limiting the impact of legislation on the deficit they say their expectation is those tax cuts will be extended bringing the price tag of the tax bill well beyond $15 trillionFor the next eight years however the GOP tax bill itself gives the vast majority of Americans a tax cut Only 5 percent will pay more next year according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center analysis of the final bill and most of those are people earning six-figures who live in major cities like New York and San Francisco"It’s not the kind of disaster many in the media have made it out to be" says economist Tyler Cowen of George Mason University "There’s a good chance it will prove popular next year once people see their taxes go down"Whatever the future holds it’s clear the GOP’s decision to increase the deficit to cut taxes breaks with recent precedent Republicans started the year promising to fix America’s corporate tax code but to do it in a way that was deficit neutralA big fiscal deal nearly achieved by Obama and then-House Speaker John Boehner R-Ohio would have raised taxes while cutting spending – modeled after the bipartisan Simpson Bowles Commission that had made similar recommendationsEven President Ronald Reagan’s tax overhaul in 1986 which many Republicans regard as the gold-standard was structured to be revenue neutral The new GOP bill took a far different approach"The bill is very consistent with Republican ideology that the solutions are all in the private sector" said William Gale a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center and former staff economist at the Council for Economic Advisors under President George HW Bush "Businesses corporations and pass throughs are getting big breaks at the ultimate expense of the government’s ability to address any of the pressing social or domestic issues"There’s widespread agreement that in the short term the tax bill will grow the economy a bit faster perhaps eclipsing a rate of 4 percent for a quarter or twoThe question is what happens after the initial bounce Republicans argue that upswing will continue for many more years as businesses invest more If this projection proves accurate it will alleviate many of the fiscal pressures facing the country since economic growth itself will help stabilize the debt"I don’t think the tax bill pays for itself but I’m not as concerned about deficit impact as others are" says Glenn Hubbard dead of Columbia Business School and President George W Bush’s chief economist "We need to raise productivity growth in the US A tax cut on business income is a very big step in that direction"But if that optimism proves unwarranted as many analyses predict it could be present a peril to the nation especially if an economic downturn or a foreign policy crisis requires the government to step up spending"I thought it was bad enough we had debt at record levels" says Goldwein "But it’s going to get worse"Author Information:Heather Long is an economics correspondentUlster
