We did a good job getting stops, we just didn’t get the rebound,” Vucevic said. “We have to change that and play with a lot more intensity.”Portland coach Terry Stotts said the Blazers were better in the second half.“The first half was very disappointing with our defensive focus, aggressiveness, everything. I didn’t think we had much of an impact on the game at all in the first half defensively,” He said. “But I liked, especially the third quarter, that defensively we were much better and obviously Damian in the third quarter was incredible. He carried us like he does often.”Portland was coming off a 104-100 loss at home to the Clippers on Sunday night.ABOUT THOSE 3S Nadine Lustre’s phone stolen in Brazil Portland finished with a season-high 19 3-pointers. first_imgPresident Weah signing the controversial ETON and EBOMAF deals at his Foreign Ministry office in MonroviaDespite heightened public concerns about transparency and the lack of due diligence done on the two proposed road construction loan agreements, President George Manneh Weah, on Thursday morning signed into law, the controversial Eton and EBOMAF SA Loan financing Agreements. The signing ceremony took place at the C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the presence of top officials of ETON and EBOMAF who traveled from Singapore and Burkina Faso to grace the occasion. Also present was the Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso, Alpha Barry.Speaking briefly after the signing, President Weah described the deals as two landmark pieces of legislation that were not just enacted by both the upper and lower houses but were endorsed by a larger population.“I want to thank God Almighty for this glorious undertaking and also want to laud the legislature for ratifying the loan and for their overwhelming support,” he said. “It now gives me a great pleasure, in keeping with our constitution, to perform the presidential endorsement that gives these agreements the force of law.”The approval of the loans, according to the President, will enable the government to immediately embark on infrastructural projects that are intended to directly improve the living conditions of the Liberian people.“It is my intention that by the end of my term in office, I will have connected all of the county capitals with all weather roads. This is a promise that I have made to my people, and it is a pledge that I intend to keep,” he noted.President Weah and his partners, as well as top government officials in a group photoHe told the audience, many of whom were members of both Houses, that the construction of the roads is the centerpiece of his government’s pro-poor agenda, which ultimate objective is to lift Liberians out of poverty.“This is my commitment and it shall be my focus; and this shall be my legacy. And this shall be permanent and perpetual inheritance that we will leave behind when our time is over. These will be for the benefit of the generations yet unborn,” he said. The two deals will ensure the pavement of 830 kilometers of roads. The EBOMAF SA Loan will cover the pavement of 323.7 km roads including the Somalia Drive via Kesselley Boulevard to Sinkor in Monrovia -16km, Tappita to Zwedru in Nimba and Grand GedehCounties and from Toe Town in Grand Gedeh County to Ivory Coast Border-10.2km road. It includes the 185km road from Zwedru in Grand Gedeh County to Greenville in Sinoe County. The ETON loan will cover 505.3km of roads including the corridor from Grand Bassa County in Buchanan through Cestos City in Rivercess County to Greenville City in Sinoe County onward to Barclayville City in Grand Kru County -316km road. When these roads are completed, the President believes firmly that, they will make a significant impact on the economy. Besides enhancing economic growth and development, he noted that it will also bring additional social benefits by providing the citizenry easy access to healthcare, education, employment and other opportunities that will enhance their wellbeing. The audience at the signing ceremonyRoad connectivity, Weah said, makes crucial contributions to economic development and growth. “It also comes with immense social benefits. It (road) has a vital importance in making a nation grow and prosperous, in addition to providing access to employment, health and educational services and enhance the fight against poverty.“Therefore, I ask for your support, your patience and your understanding as we embark upon the necessary actions that will ensure our beloved country is built,” he said to a very loud applaud led by VP Jewel Howard-Taylor,” he said.Other intangible benefits that these projects will bring, President Weah also believe, “is that it will make our country a more socially cohesive society and a united populace where citizens can travel and mix with each other more easily—and through dialogue will enhance the prospect of tolerance and stability.”The President told reporters after the signing ceremony that there would be a three-year timeline for all roads earmarked to be completed. “We will not settle down for four years or more for the completion of roads that are under consideration for construction and thank God Mr. Boukoungou has promised us just that,” he said. The Minister of Public Works, Mobutu Vlah Nyenpan noted that the deals and their targets represent unprecedented milestones in the history of the country in the quest for socio-economic development. It is unfortunate that over 94 percent of total roads (11,000 KM) in a country that gained independence 150 years ago to be unpaved—a clear danger to lives and properties, he said. “Such a situation is not healthy for our country and we are endeavoring to change it,” the minister said. When the ETON and EBOMAF roads are completed plus an additional 312 kilometers that are ongoing, it will take the total number of paved roads to 1,150 kilometers. “This will tell us that we are going somewhere,” Minister Nyenpan said.EBOMAF Group President Mahamadou Boukoungou, who represented his company and a top official of ETON, in brief remarks, promised to do quality work. The two companies noted that the funding for the projects have been sourced and will begin shortly.Meanwhile, the ceremony was also graced by some top dignitaries including the Foreign Minister of Burkina-faso, Alpha Barry; Vice President, Jewel Howard-Taylor; scores of Lawmakers led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Bhofal Chambers and the Senate Pro-tempore, Albert Chie. Scores of top members of the cabinent were also present.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgHis mom, Elsie Leon, rode with him in the ambulance to Torrance Memorial Medical Center. “He just kept saying, `I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, I’m going to die,”‘ Elsie said. “I think because he was so scared, I automatically went into calm mode to calm him down.” Sebastian was given antivenin and his dad spent the night with him at the hospital. His mom stayed home with Sebastian’s three siblings. On Tuesday, he was transferred to intensive care at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach, where he was given about 15 doses of antivenin. “This case was particularly unique because (Sebastian) was bitten by a baby snake,” said Dr. Carlos Maggi, director of the pediatric intensive care unit at Miller Children’s Hospital. “And baby snakes are notorious for releasing all their venom on the victim at once.” Miller Children’s Hospital has one or two snakebite victims a year, Maggi said, but most people are bitten by adult snakes, which limit the release of their venom. Sebastian was home Thursday and said by Monday he should be back at Dapplegray Elementary School. His foot is still swollen, and it will be awhile before he can return to some of his normal activities, such as playing tennis and soccer. Maggi said Sebastian won’t have any long-term complications from the bite, and will only need treatment from his regular doctor. Sebastian has the dead snake in a container and said he plans to bury it in his backyard. “I’m going to dig it really deep so the worms can eat it,” he said. laura.davis@dailybreeze.com160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. But that was no needle – it was a baby rattlesnake. “It was curled around me, and I kicked it off,” said the Rolling Hills Estates fifth-grader. His friend, Tyler Rosen, then killed it with a baseball bat. The boys yelled for help, and Tyler’s mother called 911. By the time paramedics arrived, Sebastian’s foot and leg were swollen. He was shivering and had trouble breathing. “I was thinking, `I don’t want to die this way,”‘ Sebastian said. “I felt scared that if I was going to die, I would never see anyone again.” By Laura E. Davis STAFF WRITER Unlike most boys his age, 10-year-old Sebastian Leon is actually looking forward to school next week. He’s got a great story to tell his classmates. On Monday afternoon, he was playing a game of touch football barefoot in his friend’s backyard in Rolling Hills. As he stepped back to make a catch, he felt a sharp pain in his left foot, like a needle piercing his skin. last_img

At the time of most of the offences he had fallen in with the wrong crowd.“He is attempting to put his life back together. He was born here, was away in Scotland for a few years, and then came back here.“He has a good steady job now in London and wishes to continue that.”Mr Gallagher said his client would return to court on March 2 from London with a further €2,500 compensation for his victims.Judge Kelly questioned why compensation had not been paid previously.Mr Gallagher said Moore had been sending money home to pay for home repairs for his parents. The judge said that he should have been paying his victims, not his family. However he postponed sentence to allow Moore to pay compensation and he released Moore on bail to appear again at Letterkenny District Court on March 2.He warned Moore that he should appear that day.Judge Kelly ordered that the €700 handed in to court today should go the victim with the biggest loss from the thefts “as a down payment”.CRIME SPREE THUG RELEASED ON BAIL TO ALLOW HIM TO PAY €7,700 TO VICTIMS was last modified: January 6th, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Annagryburglarcrime spreePhilip Moorethieflast_img read more

first_imgCity of Derry Airport could close within a year because of a multi-million pound shortfall in funding, a leaked report says.It emerged in June that government funding of £2.5million promised in 2016 has yet to be paid because of Stormont’s collapse. The funding was pledged to help develop new routes at the airport. Now BBC are reporting that Derry City and Strabane District council have warned that the airport may not be sustainable beyond next year. A report compiled by the council’s head of finance Alfie Dallas, which has been seen by the BBC, says the airport is “seeking immediate access to the £2.5million Route Development Fund.”Mr Dallas’ report says the money is needed to ensure the continuation of the Stansted service currently operating at the airport. It is a public service obligation (PSO) air route meaning it would not be viable commercially without government support. The Stansted route is currently funded with help of the Department of Transport but this is due to run out next year and the airport needs £2.5m from Stormont to continue it. The council report continues: “There is an urgency attached to this request, in that a tender or renegotiation process needs to be progressed in order to ensure that the London PSO route can continue in operation beyond May 2019.“To enable this to be progressed, the required funding must be confirmed by late August/September 2018.“Failure to do so will mean the London route will cease and the airport will no longer be sustainable beyond May 2019.”The BBC has also seen correspondence between the Council’s Chief Executive John Kelpie and the Head of the Civil Service, David Sterling. In a letter to Mr Kelpie dated 22 June, Northern Ireland’s top civil servant said the previously announced £2.5million “was intended to support the establishment of new routes, rather than to extend existing routes from the airport.” Mr Sterling acknowledged ongoing discussions between council and Northern Ireland’s Department of the Economy on new routes. He said the lack of a minister and executive meant these discussions could not be advanced.Mr Sterling warned that should the route development funds be used to bolster the existing London route it would “potentially render any further route development proposals unaffordable.”Meanwhile a Department of Economy spokesman said they allocated the “the funding for the air route development element of the support package for the 2016/17 financial year.” “However, following engagement with Derry City and Strabane District Council, this funding was surrendered as it could not be utilised in part or full in that financial year,” he added.Derry City and Strabane District Council said the issues would be discussed by councillors.A spokeswoman said: “A detailed paper outlining the urgency of getting access to £2.5m route development fund money set aside by the NI Executive will come before members of the Governance and Strategic Planning Committee on Tuesday.”She said the report “will also discuss the future needs of the airport with regard to the management support of the facility and provide an update in relation to the annual funding operation subsidy of the Airport.”The airport is currently running at a £2.145m loss per year, paid for by Derry City and Strabane District Council ratepayersFears over potential closure of Derry Airport was last modified: July 3rd, 2018 by Chris CannonShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:ClosuresDerry Airportfundinglast_img read more
