Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida will cast their votes in January. California will vote in the first week of February. By Super Bowl Sunday, the major party presidential nominations could be decided. And there’s more to the Feb. 5 vote than presidential politics. Locally, voters in the Redondo Unified School District will decide whether the district should issue $145 million in bonds to renovate and modernize existing classrooms and school buildings, improve computer and science labs, and improve athletic facilities. A 55percent “Yes” vote is required for Measure C to pass. In Los Angeles, voters will decide the fate of a proposal to reduce the city’s tax on communications users from 10 percent to 9percent and make the tax compatible with new federal regulations. The tax could be expanded to technologies other than telephone service. MeasureR proponents say it would fund such services as police and fire protection, street maintenance, parks and libraries. The timing of this primary means it will be over quickly. first_img1 Angel Di Maria Inter Milan have agreed personal terms with former Manchester United flop Angel Di Maria. The Argentina international previously spent one season at Old Trafford, before joining Paris Saint-Germain for around £44million in July 2015.The 29-year-old, who cost Manchester United a British record £59.7m in 2014, has been back to his best in France.Di Maria’s performances have now alerted big-spending Inter and, according to reports in Italy, they have accelerated talks to agree personal terms with him.The midfielder has provisionally given the green light to join the Italian side on a long-term deal and now discussions are under way over a transfer fee.PSG are said to want close to the £44m they paid for Di Maria two years ago, while they are also eager to find a replacement before selling him.Top of the French side’s shortlist of replacements is Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez, who has been linked to several clubs in England too.last_img read more

first_imgCreeslough man John Downey has been granted bail pending an extradition appearance. Mr Downey is facing charges in relation to the killing of two Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) soldiers in Enniskillen in 1972, will be granted bail this afternoon. Northern Irish authorities are seeking the surrender of Downey, aged 66 to face charges in relation to the 1972 bombing in Enniskillen which killed two British Army Infantrymen. Lance Corporal Alfred Johnston and Private James Eames were killed when a device exploded in a vehicle they were checking on the Irvinestown Road, Cherrymount.Mr Downey was arrested on foot of a European Arrest Warrant at his home address in Ards, Creeslough, on Monday and brought to the High Court the following day. The warrant was issued by Northern Irish authorities and endorsed by the High Court on Monday morning.Det. Sgt Jim Kirwan, of the Garda Extradition Unit, told Ronan Kennedy BL, for the State, that he arrested Mr Downey on foot of the warrant at his “substantial residence” on Monday and cautioned him.In reply, Mr Downey told the detective “I’d say it was the DUP and not the DPP” who decided to charge him in relation to the matter, Det. Sgt Kirwan said.High Court judge Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly said today that it was appropriate to grant bail on Mr Downey’s own bond of €500 and two independent sureties of €15,000 each. She said €10,000 of each of those two sureties are to be lodged. The matter will be mentioned before the court again this afternoon.Ms Justice Donnelly said she had a concern in relation to Mr Downey’s means. While Mr Downey has said he is on a State pension, Ms Justice Donnelly said she had no idea whether it was a contributory pension or a non-contributory pension.“I’ve no idea what he’s been working at,” the judge said. She said there was evidence from Det. Sgt Jim Kirwan that Mr Downey resided at a “substantial property” and “for some reason” the property was “transferred out of his name to his wife” last year.Ms Justice Donnelly said a cash sum of €5,000 raised by Mr Downey’s wife and two adult children was also a concern to the court. The judge said she had to “take the view” that Mr Downey had access “through his acquaintances” to a “greater level of surety”.She noted that the proposed surety was an accumulation of cash “quite distinct from having money in a bank account”.Counsel for Mr Downey, Tony McGillicuddy BL, said he could see a “substantial point” being raised in favour of refusing his client’s surrender.Mr McGillicuddy said Section 39 (2) of the European Arrest Warrant Act states that a person shall not be surrendered where he or she has, in accordance with the law of the issuing state, become immune, by virtue of any amnesty or pardon, from prosecution or punishment in the issuing state for the offence specified in the European arrest warrant issued in respect of him or her.Mr Downey’s trial in relation to the 1982 London Hyde Park bombing – in which four British soldiers and seven horses were killed – collapsed in February 2014 over a letter sent to him and other alleged republican paramilitaries. The letters, issued by the Tony Blair government, told the republicans they were not wanted for the prosecution of crimes committed during the Troubles. The “on-the-run” scheme and letters, which fully emerged following the collapse of Mr Downey’s 2014 Hyde Park trial, triggered a major political controversy and lead to an inquiry.Mr Downey is the first so-called “on-the-run” republican to be charged with offences since the scheme was found by a House of Commons Committee to have “distorted the process of justice”.John Downey granted bail pending extradition appearance was last modified: November 8th, 2018 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:bailCreesloughdonegalHIGH COURTJohn Downeylast_img read more

first_imgA top HSE counselor has admitted he “would not be surprised” if there are hundreds of clerical abuse victims across Donegal.Director of Counselling with the National Counselling Service with the HSE in the North West, Tom McGrath, said his team are now preparing for the audit into abuse in the Diocese of Raphoe. The report is expected to be made public very soon – possibly at the end of this month. Mr McGrath revealed his team were bringing in additional support including more telephone lines to cope with the expected demand for their services.Mr McGrath told “You have to remember that this audit will go back to 1975 and you are dealing with a lot of people going through the system within that time,” he said.To cope with the expected deluge of phonecalls ahead of the report into child sex abuse, Mr McGrath said the HSE will be setting up extra phonelines.“The feedback form this report will go on for years and years but we do expect an initial impact to our services. “We will have extra phonelines and extra counselors on hand when we know the exact date the report is being published,” he said.He added that the HSE were also considering linking up with the Rape Crisis Centre to help those abused by priests over the years in Co Donegal.Mr McGrath’s comments come as Bishop of Raphoe, Dr. Philip Boyce said he did not accept reports that there were “hundreds” of victims of more than 20 paedophile priests in Co Donegal.“I wish to assure the people of the Diocese of Raphoe that this assertion is simply not true. Furthermore it is seriously damaging to the good work of the many trained volunteers who are actively committed to safeguarding children in all of the parishes of the diocese.“All allegations of abuse made known to the Diocese of Raphoe are reported to An Garda Síochána and the Health Service Executive. “As I have stated on many occasions, I invited Ian Elliot and his team from the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church to conduct a review of the diocesan files relating to child abuse allegations. I gave them my full co-operation and they examined all files.“When I receive the final report from the National Board, probably next month, I am committed to publishing the review. I will be happy to respond to media queries at that time,” he said.EndsHSE PREPARING FOR INFLUX OF ABUSE CLAIMS ADMITS TOP COUNSELLOR was last modified: August 12th, 2011 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:abusebishop boyceHSETom McGrathlast_img read more

first_imgSo where was Grace Boyle canvassing yesterday?Local election candidate Grace Boyle has slammed the lack of signage on many of Letterkenny’s housing estates. The Fine Gael candidate said the lack of such signage could prove fatal for some residents in the case of an emergency.Grace Boyle told Donegal Daily, “This is the entrance to Mountain View housing estate in Mountain Top, Letterkenny. While canvassing this area, we couldn’t figure out what estate we were going into because there is absolutely no signage identifying the estate”. According to Boyle residents there are seriously concerned that there is no signage to identify their estate.“They have witnessed ambulances pulling into the estate trying to answer an emergency call, only to find out that they should be in a different estate. What if an ambulance cannot find someone who needs emergency attention?”.Grace concluded by calling on Donegal County Council to prioritise the up-grading and maintenance of signage on our roads.“The Council must also ensure that every area or estate is adequately identified, whether an estate is in charge of the Council or not. As well as the fact that good signage will reduce accidents and ensure that our tourists don’t get lost, it will also ensure that emergency vehicles can find patients, before it is too late”.  ELECTION 2014: BOYLE SAYS LACK OF HOUSING ESTATE SIGNAGE COULD BE FATAL was last modified: May 1st, 2014 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:AMBULANCESdonegalGrace Boylehousing estatelast_img read more
