first_img Ahmed Elmohamady tapped home the first after a wonderful run and cross by Andy Robertson and Courtois’ calamitous touch handed Abel Hernandez an open net just seconds later. For long periods thereafter the relegation battlers were the better side, driving relentlessly at a Chelsea team who were visibly shaken, but Remy settled matters just 92 seconds after replacing Costa, who could not add to his 20th of the season. It was a flowing move from the league leaders, ending with Willian’s cutback to Remy, whose shot squirmed agonisingly over the line after sneaking through Allan McGregor’s legs. The result strengthens Chelsea’s grasp on the title and does little for Hull’s fight against the drop, though Steve Bruce’s men at least showed heart for the struggle ahead. That was not the case when Chelsea took the lead with embarrassing ease in just the second minute. Hazard was the most alert man on the field, collecting Costa’s pass and charging towards goal as the entire Hull team, most notably Gaston Ramirez and Paul McShane, backed away and allowed him to wind up as he approached the area. His rasping shot zipped past McGregor and kicked off a breakneck period of scoring in style. Hull should have equalised moments later, Hernandez going one on one with Courtois after Dame N’Doye’s clever flick on. He made a clean connection with his shot but Courtois, having narrowed the angle, spread himself to make a vital save. A thrilling 3-2 victory restored the Blues’ six-point lead at the Barclays Premier League summit but the Tigers were desperately unlucky not to take something from a rousing encounter. Fine efforts from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa put the visitors two up inside nine minutes but the expected rout never materialised as Hull stunned their visitors with two goals in as many minutes before the half-hour. Chelsea cashed in with their second, Costa collecting Cesc Fabregas’ ball before darting into the left channel. He appeared to have lost his shooting angle but cut back, evaded Michael Dawson and Alex Bruce, and bent a stunning effort across McGregor and in off the far post. Hull might have crumbled and it briefly seemed certain that they would, b ut instead they switched from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 and fashioned a rousing comeback. The graceful N’Doye worked Courtois with a free-kick then headed the resulting corner straight at the Belgian as Chelsea’s back four began to fray at the seams. Chelsea threatened a third, Costa heading over from Filipe Luis cross, but Hull’s appetite only increased. They needed a moment of inspiration to get on the board and Robertson provided it. The Scot raced past Willian and Branislav Ivanovic with an electric run down the left then served up a wonderful cross that snaked across the six-yard line and into Elmohamady’s path. His conversion sent the stadium in raptures and just a minute later Hull had their second. Courtois claimed the assist this time, dealing calamitously with Ivanovic’s back pass as he clumsily presented Hernandez with an unmissable gift. The Uruguayan, having not scored since October, rolled home as the men in Blue looked on in open-mouthed amazement. For the next 15 minutes Chelsea were on the ropes – Ivanovic, Ramires and Gary Cahill all contributing to a huge error count – but David Meyler and Ramirez sent the best chances well wide. The visitors were immediately improved after the break – Jose Mourinho presumably having had plenty to say for himself – with Hazard and Costa immediately causing consternation in the Hull defence. There were signs of nervous tension, though, Costa tustling with Jake Livermore in none too friendly fashion. Hull were also eyeing three points and Courtois went some way to paying back his debt to the side with a stunning triple save in the 64th minute. Elmohamady, Livermore and Ramirez all drilled shots goalwards in the space of 10 frantic seconds and each time Courtois was equal to the challenge. Costa’s day ended in apparent discomfort, the striker giving way for Remy. It proved a precipitous change, with the Frenchman turning match-winner instantly. Chelsea broke with a precision that had eluded them since the early exchanges and when Willian picked out Remy in the middle a goal seemed certain. He shot a shade too close at McGregor but with the Scot mid-dive, the ball ricocheted off his legs and over the line. Loic Remy came off the bench to spare Chelsea’s blushes at Hull, with goalkeeper Thibault Courtois a relieved man after his first-half howler. Press Associationlast_img read more

first_imgON a surreal fourth morning when the Guyana Jaguars played some silly cricket, the sixth round Cricket West Indies (CWI) Professional Cricket League (PCL) Four-day encounter between the title-holders and Windward Islands Volcanoes ended in an historic tie yesterday at the National Stadium, Providence. It was the first tie in 152 years for the regional first-class championshipScores in the game: Windward Islands Volcanoes 117 and 241; Guyana Jaguars 194 and 164.Statistics had highlighted the Jaguars dominance this season, but this match shifted balance throughout its course, swinging precariously from one side to the other until the end, after the Jaguars lost their last six wickets for just 60 runs.Despite the shocking result, they Jaguars remain at the top of the table, moving to 97.2 points, having earned 10.8 from this match. It was ultimately a-below-par performance from the hosts, taking into consideration their dominance throughout the history of the PCL.Set 165 for victory, the home team resumed on 104-4, 61 runs short of the winning target, but things largely went wrong for the three-times defending champions from the very start, as off-spinner Shane Shillingford wreaked havoc with (5-47) to take his 40th five-wicket haul at this level. The Windward Islands Volcanoes players celebrate after the match ended in a tie.The former West Indies off-spinner claimed four of the six remaining Jaguars wickets, as the hosts’ batsmen had no answer to the turn and bounce of Shillingford.Resuming on 48, Test batsman Vishaul Singh was Shillingford’s first victim of the morning when he trapped the diminutive left-hander leg before wicket for 56, at 118-5.Teenagers Sherefane Rutherford and Keemo Paul failed to add any aspiration to the Jaguars intent, with Rutherford(2) being removed by left-arm seamer Delorn Johnson (3-45), while Paul (3) was run out in a total mix-up with Anthony Bramble, the other overnight batsman, at 138-7.Bramble, who resumed the day on ten, played a lone hand in reducing the Jaguars deficit, adding 20 with Veerasammy Permaul, but Shillingford continued to gain appreciable bounce and sharp turn, removing both Permaul (5) and Gudakesh Motie (0), at 158-9.With seven runs needed from the last pair of Bramble and Keon Joseph, the Jaguars fell short of the target by one run as Shillingford completed his five-wicket haul when he trapped Bramble leg before wicket for 45.The Jaguars now host the Leeward Islands Hurricanes in round seven from Thursday before the tournament break for the Christmas season.VOLCANOES 1st Innings 117Jaguars 1st Innings 194Volcanoes 2nd Innings 241Jaguars 2nd Innings (target: 165 runs)(overnight 104 for four) Chanderpaul lbw b Johnson 0 Hemraj lbw b Mayers 19 Johnson b D. first_imgOne student said that as an undocumented immigrant, she had been taken in by a white woman who helped her eventually get to USC. She urged students to stay united against hate in the face of divisive rhetoric. “This proves that not everyone is racist,” she said. “There are good people out there.” By 1:00 p.m., the majority of the protesters had moved off campus. A group of around 200 people from USC made its way down Figueroa Street toward Downtown, where 28 people were arrested Wednesday night in protests that blocked the 101 Freeway, according to ABC News. A group marched back onto campus near 2:00 p.m. yelling, “F–k Donald Trump” as they moved down Trousdale toward Tommy Trojan. Photo by Ellice WangSeveral hundred middle and high schoolers from the 32nd Street School gathered on campus Thursday afternoon to protest Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election. They were joined by USC students and faculty as they marched down Trousdale, eventually gathering near Tommy Trojan and chanting “Not our president” and “Si, se puede,” or“yes, we can” in Spanish. Many held signs proclaiming solidarity with minority groups and denouncing Trump and the Republican Party as fascist. Others held up flags from Mexico and El Salvador, expressing solidarity in reference to Trump’s claims that he would deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the U.S.“We are proud of our country,” one protester holding up a Salvadoran flag said in Spanish. “We want to tell Donald Trump that he cannot deport us, and that he cannot destroy us.” Students explained that seniors at the 32nd Street School collectively decided to come to USC in order to “make their voices heard.” “We’re very upset about what happened during the election and how many people were influenced by hate,” said Reginald Albert, a high school senior from the 32nd Street School. Other protestors held up the rainbow flag of the LGBT movement while many chanted “the people united will never be divided.” The group rallied in front of the Student Union, then began to disperse as some moved toward Exposition Park while others marched out onto Figueroa Street. USC students and faculty formed a “human wall” along Trousdale, then gathered around Tommy Trojan to take turns speaking about what the possibility of a Trump presidency means for them.last_img read more

NO!Jan Vertonghen’s gent insists the defender’s reaction to being subbed against Southampton has nothing to do with his uncertain future. The Spurs star is out of contract at the end of the season and has been given no assurances over an extension by his new boss. But Vertonghen’s agent Tom De Mul told HLN Sport: “He’s feeling better now.“His reaction had nothing to do with his future. He was just disappointed when he got subbed off.“Jan still wants to achieve great things with Spurs. He wants to qualify for the Europa League or Champions League, to win the FA Cup.“He is 32 but still very ambitious. He is focused. He still has so many targets. The European Championships are a super important goal too.“Jan is still super happy at Spurs and loves London. He is still very committed.”Gary Stonehouse10 Feb 2020, 9:02 pmSING WHEN YOU’RE WIJN-INGChris Waddle believes Tottenham’s new signing Steven Bergwijn might frustrate fans.He told the Racing Post: “Bergwijn needs to add consistency to his game.“You look at him and you see a player who’s good on the ball, can spot a pass, can go past players and can score goals. So you’re immediately wondering why he’s not been snapped up by a bigger club before.“My sense is that he’ll drift out of games and that might frustrate fans. But if he can sustain his appetite – and with a place in the Holland squad to nail down before the Euros he will certainly be trying – then he’ll be a hit.”Gary Stonehouse10 Feb 2020, 7:51 pmVIVE LA ROSEExclusive by Alan Nixon: Danny Rose will be watched by French giants Paris St Germain when he turns out for Newcastle.Tottenham’s exiled left-back, 29, is playing for his next move during his loan spell with the Toon and PSG are hot on his trail. And with a spell in the shop window Rose is keen to prove he can still be a top-flight operator.PSG were keen to take the England international during the window when they feared French cap Layvin Kurzawa was leaving. Both Juventus and Arsenal want Kurzawa and are likely to return for him this summer when it will be easier to do a deal. This would leave PSG needing a left-back and Rose will be top of their watchlist as he comes out of the shadows at Spurs.Gary Stonehouse10 Feb 2020, 6:59 pmCUP UPSETThe Carabao Cup is in danger of being killed off by proposed changes to the Champions League.Premier League chief Richard Masters voiced his fear as Uefa try to increase the number of group stage games from six to ten. That would put the EFL Cup in a vulnerable position in what is an already crowded fixture calendar.Masters said: “In the end, there isn’t enough space.“It’s not an absolute that if somehow the shape of the European competitions changes, the Carabao Cup is terminally damaged.“There are some clever fixture people out there that may be able to slot the thing together. But I think it would fundamentally alter its trajectory.”Gary Stonehouse10 Feb 2020, 5:59 pmROSE ME UPDanny Rose has revealed that he misses White Hart Lane and believes that leaving that ground was a “huge factor” behind the club’s current situation. He told 5 Live Sport: “One of the last days I was at the club, I think it was me and Eric Dier, we were speaking about those days and how dangerous and powerful we were.“I don’t know if people would remember this but we didn’t lose at White Hart Lane. And that is a huge factor.“For me, the new stadium is unbelievable but I miss the Old White Hart Lane. We finally made White Hart Lane a fortress and people have to remember we played at Wembley for a year and a half.”Gary Stonehouse10 Feb 2020, 4:50 pmBALE NOT SPURRED ONGareth Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett has definitively ruled out a sensational return to Tottenham for the Welshman. He told Spanish newspaper AS: “He’s 30 years old, he’ll be 31 next year. I don’t know how long Gareth will play for. It’s what his lifestyle wants.“He loves Madrid. His children have been there since they were babies, they speak Spanish, believe it or not [laughs].“The whole lifestyle is fantastic. I was there two days ago in Madrid, it was 15 degrees, beautiful.“Here it’s freezing cold. If you’re one of the greatest footballers to have ever played, why do you want to…”Gary Stonehouse10 Feb 2020, 4:11 pmBACK FOR MAURMauricio Pochettino is reportedly hopeful of being Manchester United manager next season. The Mirror claim that the former Spurs boss is still hovering on the Red Devils radar but the club will only sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if they finish outside the top six.The report adds that Pochettino, who has been out of work since he was sacked by Daniel Levy in November, has told friends he wants to resume his career in the summer. The 47-year-old is prepared to be patient as he lines up his next move but is understood to be excited by the prospect of taking over the United dugout.Gary Stonehouse9 Feb 2020, 3:27 pmNO MOUR OF THATPaul Merson claims Jose Mourinho is looking like he regrets becoming Tottenham manager. He told the Daily Star: “I said when he went there it would give them a lift and there would be a charm offensive – and he was all smiles for a while.“But everyone knew it wouldn’t last, didn’t they? He’s gone back to being Grumpy Mourinho again. And I don’t see how he’s improved them at all. first_img KC Graham: Based on her flat 400m speed so far this season, where she has recorded a personal best (PB)of 51.17 so early in the season, she looks set to do something special in the 400m hurdles, and today could be the start of great things from her. Lowe: Her inexperience on the circuit has showed in the past. She has finished seventh in her last three Diamond League appearances, but would have gained valuable experience from those plus her fifth-placed World Champs run. KC Graham: I think her biggest danger in this race will be Kemi Adekoya from Bahrain, whose season best is 54.87 seconds. Once Russell runs a more controlled race, instead of saving for the final stages, she should do well here. Lowe: Adekoya ran that PB in what is her only outdoor race so far this year, and remember that she won the World Indoor 400m title earlier this year in a fast 51.45 seconds. She’s having the best season of her young career, but we cannot overlook the South African Wenda Theron Nel, who had also gone below 55 seconds already. KC Graham: Oh, I forgot about her! The South African is very dangerous. If Russell passes this test and wins, then this could be the platform for her for the rest of the season, including Rio. A win here will be a big confidence booster for her. Lowe: Sounds like you’re shying away from calling a winner. Listen, I think it’s going to be very close between these three. Russell is the fastest, and I think her early season speed work will pay off here. It will be even for 300m, but I expect her to pull away for her first Diamond League win. KC Graham: I am not. Sentiments-wise, I like Russell, but experience-wise, both Theron and Adekoya are extremely good and it should be very close, but I think Adekoya should win in a close finish, but Russell should lower her PB. KC Graham: Janieve Russell has been Jamaica’s best female 400 metres hurdler so far this season and will get her sternest test today. Lowe: 54.61 already this year makes her the second fastest on the planet in the event, but you are right. This is going to be a hot one in the Moroccan desert, with a couple of good girls also lined up in this event. KC Graham: She is yet to score a major win on the circuit in her short career, but I think things will change as she is full of confidence this season. Lowe: I’m really encouraged by her start to the season, especially considering that she had surgery at the end of last year and also had other issues dealing with. She seems, however, to have zoned in and must be feeling good about her chances after that run at the Jamaica Invitational. We don’t know what her workout was like last week, but she has not competed since then, so should be itching to be unleashed. Inexperiencelast_img read more

first_imgAttorney Garrison Barh, Gobal Bank’s lead lawyer, who was due to appear before the Monrovia City Court on Tuesday, February 21 to answer to theft of property and misapplication of entrusted property charges, is reportedly on the run, this newspaper has reliably learned.Barh’s action yesterday prompted Magistrate Kennedy Peabody to hold him in contempt, but the court has subsequently given him until today to surrender himself.Magistrate Peabody said if Barh refuses to come under the court’s jurisdiction today, an order which he had initially promised to obey, the defendant will be rearrested and detained at the Monrovia Central Prison. The charges were brought against defendant Barh by the Liberia National Police (LNP) following the completion of an investigation of the disappearance of US$67,513 and L$444, 450 at the bank, for which the report allegedly implicated Barh. The police later turned defendant Barh over to the court for prosecution, when Magistrate Peabody released him without posting a bond with the expectation that the defendant would reappear for hearing on Tuesday. Up to the time court closed yesterday, the whereabouts of Atty. Barh was unknown.Kennedy’s decision was based on Barh’s status as a lawyer and a prominent person in the society, whom he believed would not attempt to escape justice. It was also intended to give the attorney an opportunity to file the relevant criminal bond that will prevent him from going to prison. The investigation allegedly established that Atty. Barh withdrew some of the money directly from customers, who the bank sued before the Debt Court in an attempt to recover loans the customers have refused to pay back. Defendant Barh initially denied the allegation. The bank further claimed that Atty. Barh deposited US$67,513 and L$444,450 directly into his personal account. They further alleged that Barh also used his power-of-attorney to withdraw US$3,000 from payments made to the court by Silver Stone, which is one of the bank’s delinquent loan customers.Apart from collecting delinquent loan payers’ money, the document claimed that Atty. Barh received from his employer the amount of US$42,000 and L$597,200 intended to notarize 698 copies of loan documents.Out of the 698 copies, the record also alleged that 326 copies were notarized of which he used US$21,070 and L$146,750 and did not account for the US$20,930 and L$448,750 believed to have been left over.Barh allegedly prepared a fraudulent document believed to have come from Provident Business Consultancy, which he claimed was the entity that he hired to notarize the documents.Without the knowledge of the bank, Barh also withdrew 10 percent from almost all the money which delinquent customers paid to the court, the record said. The bank also gave Atty. Barh US$7,980 and L$2,004 to facilitate the bank‘s legal services, but he has not yet accounted for that moneyThese were some of the allegations that Barh was due to answer.Defendant Barh was instructed to reappear before Magistrate Peabody last Tuesday to continue with his case, but up to present his whereabouts is unknown, which prompted the court to hold him in contempt. If Barh does not show up in court today, Thursday, February 23, an order will be put out for his arrest.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgPrize for Literature falloutSocial Cohesion Minister Dr George Norton, holder of the portfolio for culture, youth and sport, has accepted that he has responsibility for the prestigious Guyana Prize for Literature.Flashback: Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo (fifth from left) is flanked by the 2015 Guyana Prize for Literature awardees from (left to right) Subraj Singh, Stanley Niamatali, Maggie Harris, David Dabydeen, Barbara Jenkins, Eddie Baugh and Al Creighton who represented Harold A BascomSpeaking to the media on Monday, he observed that he would be updating Cabinet on the matter, as opposed to formally responding to the ongoing issue.Minister Norton indicated that he has taken issue with the public disclosures in the press, and observed that he would not be engaging letter writers.“Every day, in response to a report, other areas are being unearthed. So I don’t want to give a half-answer or half coverage of the whole issue, but what I will do is report to cabinet on the present situation,” he promised. The prestigious award was supposed to be held in July of 2017, with March 31, 2017 being the deadline for submissions. Guyana Times had reported that Government did not release funds to the Guyana Prize for Literature Committee, which halted the hosting of the event in 2017, but Secretary to the Committee, Al Creighton, later explained that the submissions were still being judged, and promised the awards ceremony would be hosted later in 2018.In recent disclosures to the press, persons are in fact questioning whether the award recipients are mostly overseas-based writers, as opposed to writers who reside locally. Another issue raised was that writers submitted entries one year and would judge the following year and would win the award in “a monotonous revolution”.However, Minister Norton maintained that he would not respond to disclosures in the various letters published in the press. “I have a mandate to respond, to bring everybody up to date, but what happened is the persons who will give me the information are already responding to these letters, and I don’t want to do that. I am waiting to get as much information as possible,” he stressed on Monday. After reports about withholding funding in the media surfaced, Minister Norton denied that this was so, but he had alluded to the “financial implication” of hosting the event. The Guyana Prize is awarded to writers of Guyanese nationality in several different categories. These categories include Best First Book of Poetry, Best First Book of Fiction, Best Book of Poetry, Best Book of Fiction and Best Book of Drama. Additionally, the Guyana Prize also awards Books of Poetry, Fiction and Drama in separate categories for Caribbean writers. The Guyana Prize was established in 1987 to provide encouragement for the development of good creative writing among Guyanese in particular, and Caribbean writers in general. The Prize is for published books, and is open to works by citizens of Caribbean countries: Caricom States, the Commonwealth Caribbean, and the Netherlands Antilles.last_img read more
